Braves Stumble Against Kerry Park

Story and Photos by Christian J. Stewart

IMG 2368The Kerry Park Islanders rode a solid performance from goaltender Jessie Jenks to a 4-3 shoot-out win over the Saanich Braves Friday evening.

February 10, 2012, Saanich, BC (ISN) - Call up goaltender Jessie Jenks stopped 35 of 38 shots in regulation and overtime and another three in the shoot-out to lead the Kerry Park Islanders to a 4-3 win over the Saanich Braves Friday evening in VIJHL action at Pearkes Arena in Saanich.

The Braves, who were playing without their Captain and leading scorer Ty Jones who is on a recruiting visit to Elmira College in New York, were a little chaotic at times without their Captain at the helm, but managed to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission, thanks to powerplay goals by Jack Palmer and Brandon Parmar.  Jake Newman had a short-handed marker for Kerry Park.

The Islanders would get their own powerplay goal early in the second from Josh Garneau, as he tied the game 2-2 just 50 seconds into the period.

Kerry Park's Josh Garneau, here skating away from a sprawled Nick Vanstone, would score Kerry Park's second goal on Friday.

The teams would trade chances over the next few minutes, with the Braves jumping into the lead with yet another powerplay goal, this time off the stick of Connor Krupa with 12:40 remaining in the period.

The Islanders did not go away however and tied it up again with the first even strength goal of the game from Eric Mansueti with 4:42 remaining in the second.

The third period was dominated by the Braves, who outshot the Islanders 13-9, but the steady and solid play of Jenks, as well as that of Saanich starter Tanner McGaw kept the score even, eventually sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, nothing was decided and the game went to a 3-player shoot-out.  The Islanders Kyle Peterson would score on the Islanders first attempt and that was all that was needed as Jenks shut the door on all three Saanich shooters to secure the 4-3 victory.

Kerry Park call-up goaltender Jesse Jenks stopped 35 of 38 shots, plus 3 more in the shoot-out to secure the 4-3 win for the Islanders.

The win for the Islanders was big for them, coming on the heels of a 9-6 loss to Peninsula on Thursday, and moving them back to within two points of the Panthers and four points of Oceanside in the battle for higher playoff positions.

With the overtime loss, the Braves remain move to 41 points and sit two back of Comox for second place overall in the League.

Saanich Head Coach Brad Cook was a little disappointed with his team's effort Friday, "We had a good first period, but then a couple of miscues that let them back in the game.  They came out and played physical and I think we could have answered the bell a bit more on that end.  We came out and had another sub par second period which seems to be our M.O. this year, and is a little concerning."

"We were missing a key player in our lineup tonight, but that should not matter. We need some other guys to step up.  I thought some guys got intimidated tonight and became invisible. That can't happen. We need to have everyone going and we had some guys really not competing which was disappointing.  We did get a point though, which is critical at this point in the season."
