All that stood in front of them were the Burnaby Lake RFC. The Valkyries would not be denied, downing Burnaby Lake 20-14 and hoisting the Gordon Harris Memorial Trophy high.

Valkyries Logo The Velox Valkyries were minutes from hoisting the Harris Memorial Trophy, awarded to the British Columbia Premier Women’s rugby Champions only to have Burnaby Lake snatch it from their hands in the dying seconds of the game.

Pacwest Basketball Action In Victoria

kevin light photography - camosun basketball ball jan 27-0965In PACWEST basketball action tonight, the Camosun College Chargers satisfied the home crowd at PISE with a sweep against the visiting Douglas College Royals.

The Chargers women jumped to a 14-point lead at the end of the first half of the game, limiting their opponents to a mere seven points in the first quarter and six in the second. In the third, Camosun outscored Douglas 19 points to eight and despite a surge by the Royals in the fourth in which the visitors posted 27 points versus Camosun's 14, the Chargers collected the win 60-48. The win advances the Chargers to five wins and six losses.

Women's Quarter Scores

Quarter 1: Camosun 15- 7 Douglas

Quarter 2: Camosun 27 – 13 Douglas

Quarter 3: Camosun 46 – 21 Douglas

Quarter 4: Camosun 60 – 48 Douglas

Second-year wing/point Aija Salvador had an outstanding night with 25 points and 6 rebounds.

On the men's side, it was the battle of the underdogs as the Chargers, who defeated the No. 2 Nationally ranked Capilano University Blues 91-63 just two weeks ago, faced off against the Royals who upset the fourth Nationally ranked VIU Mariners 84-68 in the first half of the season. Tonight's contest went to a three point game at the end of the second quarter with Camosun trailing 40-37. The Chargers picked up the pace in the third quarter, outscoring the Royals 18-9 to steal the lead 55-49. Camosun maintained their momentum in the final frame to collect their eighth win of the season 84-76 (with 3 losses).

Quarter 1: Camosun 20-16 Douglas

Quarter 2: Douglas 40-37 Camosun

Quarter 3: Camosun 55-49 Douglas

Quarter 4: Camosun 84-76 Douglas

Fourth-year guard Blake Mansbridge led Camosun with 22 points and 2 rebounds while teammate Trevor Scheurmann (first-year forward from Winnipeg) posted 21 points and 9 rebounds.

PACWEST action continues tomorrow as the Chargers tip-off against the Columbia Bible Bearcats from Abbotsford. Women 1pm; Men 3pm at PISE.
